Abaya Mix & Match 101: TAZA Team Edition

Are you just getting to know abaya a little more closely? Still adjusting, still figuring things out, maybe even feeling a bit unsure of yourself?

It’s okay. Believe us when we say: that phase is real.

Stepping into a modest way of dressing can feel unfamiliar at first. You might wonder if you’ll still feel like yourself, or if everything has to change all at once. But here’s one out of many things we learn: learning how to dress yourself isn’t about standing out or drawing attention. It’s about keeping things composed, balanced, and appropriate, while still feeling at ease in what you wear.

Now, now.. we’ve asked none other than our very own TAZA team, some simple steps they have in store to help you feel more settled in your journey.

1. Comfortable Should Be Your Favorite C-Word

Our Co-Founder, Afina Maharani, lives by one rule: “Keep things simple.”

For her, getting dressed is more about comfort and ease. Her approach leans to casual, even when the occasion is formal. Tips from her:

  • Balance is key. If your outfit combines different colors, keep one element more subdued to stay composed.
  • A small, practical choice like sneakers is a reliable go-to that works across different outfits without much thought.

Looking for inspiration can be helpful, especially when you are still learning what works. Afina often turns to visual references to explore color pairings, then adjusts them based on what she already owns in her wardrobe.

2. Don’t We All Love Harmony?

The MinZa behind those loving DMs you received told us, she prefers keeping color combinations within the same tone. Harmony is the key to creating a look that feels thoughtful without looking “too much.” Here are her personal tips:

  • One can always enjoy a monochromatic moment. Try mixing beige with different shades of brown for a seamless look.
  • Remember The Repetition Rule: Match the color of your khimar with your shoes or bag. This creates a visual connection that brings the whole look together.

When exploring brighter colors, she takes a more careful approach to make sure they still feel appropriate.

3. Let’s Play A Little Texture Game

Psstt! The girl behind our TikTok shared such an interesting perspective on this particular topic! As far as we know, she absolutely fell in love with the art of layering textures. If you’re a #TeamTexture, here are a few tips you can take notes from her:

  • For formal events, you can go for that structured look by choosing khimars that can be adjusted, like long pashminas or French squares
  • When it comes to headpiece, fabric matters. Materials like chiffon or georgette create a more polished look while still giving you that lightweight feel.
  • When the abaya has a clean and simple silhouette, a textured khimar can add dimension and elevate your overall look.

At the end of the day, this journey is not about perfection. It is about learning what feels right, what feels appropriate, and what helps you move through your day with ease.

You don’t have to figure everything out at once. Take it step by step. And as you do, you will find your own way of dressing, one that feels true to you while staying within what is pleasing to our Rabb.
